Middelburg Netherlands

Middelburg is a wonderful place to visit for a weekend getaway. The city has a rich history, as its port was crucial for the trade of the VOC (Dutch East India Company) in the past. You can still see the traces of this history in the splendid houses, narrow streets and excellent museums. But what impressed me the most was the amazing food. Want to know more? Here are some of the best things to do in Middelburg.

Firstly I kindly suggest considering a visit to The Netherlands. To easily reach Middelburg you have the option of flying into either Amsterdam or Rotterdam/The Hague. Things to do in Middelburg

Townhall

The Townhall of Middelburg is a gothic masterpiece that stands out on the market square.

  • The town hall has two parts: the gothic part that was built in the 15th century, and the classical part that dates back to the 17th century.
  • One can join one of the daily guided tours (one can buy the tickets at the tourist shop on the market square) to see the ceremonial rooms, the treasures and the beautiful Belgian tapestries.
  • The Townhall of Middelburg was chosen as the most beautiful town hall in The Netherlands. I don’t have a list of all the town halls in The Netherlands, but I agree: this one is very impressive.
  • The Townhall of Middelburg is a reflection of the city’s prosperity and power in the past. The town hall was the seat of the city’s government and justice, and also hosted important events and ceremonies.

The town hall has a facade with 25 statues of Zeeland’s counts and countesses, and a tower with a clock and a carillon. The town hall is also a museum, where one can learn more about the history and culture of Middelburg and Zeeland.

Lange Jan

De Lange Jan is the name of the 14th-century tower of the abbey, which stands out for its height. It is one of the most beautiful landmarks in Middelburg. It is also one of the tallest church towers in The Netherlands, with its 90 meters. It is worth climbing the 207 steps to reach the top of the tower, as it offers a stunning view over the city and its surroundings.

De Lange Jan is a symbol of Middelburg and its history. The tower was built as part of the abbey complex, and was used as a watchtower and a bell tower. The tower has a carillon of 48 bells, which plays melodies every quarter of an hour. The tower also has a weather vane in the shape of a golden angel, which is said to protect the city.

Abbey

The Abbey complex is a massive and impressive structure from the 12 centuries, which houses the regional government, three churches and a museum. The inner courtyard is a stunning square that is one of the most beautiful in The Netherlands. One can enter the three churches at the same time, by accessing the Wandelkerk.

The Abbey complex is a testimony of the religious and political history of Middelburg and Zeeland. The complex was founded by monks in the 12th century and became a powerful Benedictine monastery. The complex was also the seat of the Counts of Holland and Zeeland, and later of the States of Zeeland. The complex suffered several fires and damages over the centuries, but was always rebuilt and restored. The complex is now a national monument and a cultural attraction.

The old harbour

The harbour was once the heart of Middelburg’s trade and commerce, and you can still see the signs of its rich past in the warehouses, mansions and churches that line the water. You can take a boat tour to learn more about the history and architecture of the harbour, or simply stroll along the quays and enjoy the atmosphere. The harbour is also home to some cosy cafes and restaurants, where you can relax and watch the boats go by.

Kloveniersdoelen

Kloveniersdoelen is one of the most striking monuments in Middelburg. It was built in 1609 and used as a place of exercise for the army. During the French revolution, when the south of The Netherlands was in French hands, it served as a military hospital. Nowadays you can have lunch or dinner in the excellent restaurant or have a drink in the lush gardens. The complex also houses a cinema.

Kuiperspoort

The courtyard is a peaceful oasis in the middle of the city, where you can admire the architecture and the craftsmanship of the coopers. You can also visit the Kuiperspoort Museum, which displays tools, barrels and other objects related to the cooper trade. The museum also organizes workshops and demonstrations, where you can learn how to make your own barrel or cask.

Shopping in Middelburg

Middelburg has its fair share of big chain stores, but you can also shop at small boutiques and pretty concept stores. Sint Jansstraat, Herenstraat and Segeerstraat are the best streets to find some great antique, vintage and second-hand shops. Antique shop De Zwarte Leeuw is filled to the brim with fabulous crockery and glassware, while De Zeeuwse Jordaan is the place to buy design furniture and textiles.

Restaurants in Middelburg

Vliegendt Hert

The menu changes with the seasons, but you can always expect fresh and local ingredients, creative combinations and generous portions. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and they can help you choose the perfect wine to pair with your food. You can also buy the wine by the bottle or by the case, and take home some of the delicious flavours of Zeeland. Vliegendt Hert is more than just a restaurant, it’s an experience.

Drvkkery

I have this thing for special bookshops, and especially bookshops that are also cafés (read my article on Amazing bookstores in The Netherlands for inspiration). And Drvkkery in Middelburg is right at the top of my list. Basically, this bookstore is set in a beautiful old building facing the pretty market square. The books are set up in half circles around a café area where they serve the best sandwiches, quiches and salads. A great place for lunch, while you bury yourself in your newly acquired novel.
